The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (Special Seminar)

Friday April 10, 2015
12:30 pm

Presenter:  Ian Shipsey, Professor of Experimental Physics, University of Oxford
Series:  Nuclear, Particle, Astroparticle and Cosmology (NUPAC) Seminars
Abstract:  The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) is an 8.4-meter ground-based telescope that will carry out a wide and deep astronomical survey ~20,000 square degrees of the southern sky. Each ~10 square degree patch of sky will be visited about 1000 times in ten years. LSST's camera will be the world's largest digital camera with 3200 Megapixels, providing a field-of-view of 9.6 square degrees. The data rates are expected to be around 30 terabytes per night, and will the system will provide rapid alerts issued for objects that change in position or brightness.
