Exploring Pulsar Emission and the Interstellar Medium Using Low Frequencies

Thursday March 26, 2015
2:00 pm

 Presenter:  Kevin Stovall, UNM
Series:  Center for Astrophysics Research and Technologies Seminar Series
Abstract:  Though pulsars were initially discovered at 81.5 MHz, due to the difficulties in observing pulsars at low frequencies, most pulsar studies over the last 40 years have been at higher frequency (300 MHz and above). However, some pulsar characteristics, such as their brightness and profile behavior has been observed to deviate at low frequencies from that observed at higher frequency. Understanding these deviations will help us to better understand the mechanism that generates pulsar emission. Additionally, the effects of the interstellar medium are much greater at lower frequencies. I will present results from observations of over 50 pulsars detected in the 30 to 88 MHz range using the first station of the Long Wavelength Array.
