Understanding quantum correlations in large systems is essential for both quantum many-body physics and quantum computing. Here we propose a protocol for studying quantum correlations in large many-body systems. Using long strings of ions, we experimentally demonstrate this protocol and use it for tracking the dynamics of a single phonon inserted into a thermal bath comprised of more than 200 thermal phonons.
