VCSELs for Atomic Systems

Darwin Serkland, Sandia National Labs

(Session : Thursday from )

Abstract. Vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) offer many benefits for integrated atomic systems, including low threshold current (1mA), single-longitudinal-mode operation, circular output beam, small size, long operational lifetime, low cost, and the possibility for 2-D arrays of lasers on a single semiconductor chip. The fabrication, device physics, and properties of VCSELs will be discussed in this talk. Characteristics of particular interest to atomic system designers will be highlighted, such as laser linewidth, intensity noise, accessible wavelengths, frequency tuning, polarization state, output power, and conversion efficiency.
