EarthScope Science Teachers Workshop, UNM

Geophysical Investigation of the Underside of New Mexico (and North American) Geology

9 am - 4 pm, Saturday, April 1, 2006

co-sponsored by  NSF-Earthscope and Science Education Institute of the Southwest

This was a one-day workshop funded by the Sandia National Lab's Science Education Institute of the Southwest and UNM's Albuquerque Teachers Institute (http://www.unm.edu/~abqteach/).

Organizers: Matt Nyman (UNM) and Mousumi Roy (UNM)

Below you will find some materials and photos from the workshop.  For more information, please contact one of us.

There were 15 teachers attending, mostly from middle and elementary schools (both public and private).  The goals of the workshop was to give the participants a broad overview of what Earthscope is and the implications for NM as Earthscope instruments come through.  The Albuquerque Seismo Lab provided us with Earthscope information packets in English and Spanish.  The format was part lecture/demo with lots of discussion and online activities about earthquakes and volcanoes.

The participants also gained an overview of the tectonics, earthquake hazard, and kinematics of the Rio Grande Rift, and the RGR - GPS project.  Having the IRIS/Albuquerque Seismo Lab Earthquake Display in our department's Geology Museum was very handy for discussing earthquakes.
